My initial reaction was: why would I spend my free time hiking for weeks? That’s what I do for my job in the summer! Emily assured me that I don’t have to guide them; we can hike at our own pace during the day and meet at the camp in the evening to share our day, or we can hike together if we feel like it. She took care of all planning and logistics. I trusted her and joined them for the 21-day hiking trip on the Nüümü Poyo, a stunning, breathtaking, and the most iconic Sierra Nevada Mountain trail that I am proud of as a Californian.

Waiting for the thunderstorm to pass in the back of my truck on day 1 in Yosemite. I am forever grateful for her. Many life-changing experiences occur when someone exposes you to things that you wouldn’t know or do on your own. As a teacher and outdoor guide, I’ve seen the transformation of my students and clients unfold before my eyes, which is the most rewarding moment as an educator. Photo by Emily Wang

It changed me. I fell in love with everything that long trail had to offer. What I loved most was the chance to “live” in nature, cultivate a much deeper connection and relationship with myself and Mother Earth, and contemplate ways to take care of myself and the environment whether I’m on the trail or not. I enjoyed solitude, constant movement, and receiving blessings: clean air, natural mineral water, edible plants and berries- all gave me bursting energy to keep moving, and a sense of enormous freedom and joy.

I loved it so much when I finished at Tumanguya, more commonly known as Mt. Whitney. I waved to my friends and hiked northbound back to Yosemite, and continued hiking north along the PCT until I had to return to my job in the Bay Area. I remember thinking, “This is it!” I found something I would dedicate my time and resources to continue doing to live a life that brings “the best version of myself.”

5 years later, here I am- I hiked the PCT, CDT, and AT, which overlap with the southern 100 miles of the Long Trail, our oldest long-distance trail in the United States. These three are known to be the major national scenic trails, and those who hiked the three are eligible for the Triple Crown of Hiking Award. I guess it is an achievement. I would accept the honor humbly; however, that’s not the point, at least for me.

The point is to live a life fully and model that’s possible. The capitalistic society keeps us numb to our own basic needs: sleep, drink water, eat healthy food, clear the bowels, and cultivate caring relationships. Without these fundamental needs being met, we are driven to a deficit mindset. I work to stay awake under the systemic pressure to live an “American dream (nightmare)” life, filled with unnecessary material and distractions that alienate life and relationships, whether I am on the trail or not. What trail life does is simplify the work and makes it easy to see the truth, only if you’re open to it and willing to let go of some of the common colonial mindset and behaviors: conquer, compete, and control. These three “Cs” are prevalent in thru-hiking culture, and I feel disappointed and sad when I hear the words and behaviors that are coming from the mindset of the three “Cs.”

As I recover from the food poisoning that happened at the end of AT, taking my time to slowly come back to normal, I thought about the meaning of coincidence- finishing the AT on the new moon and total solar eclipse day. I associate these two events with darkness before light, implying the need for rest, reset, regain, and repurpose before something new begins. My online search brought some new meanings to the metaphor:

Fresh Starts: A natural reset button for life, goals, and habits.
Planting Seeds: Setting quiet intentions and making plans before trying to show results to the world.
Rest and Silence: A dark, quiet time to pause, look inward, and recover energy.

This time, my reflection may take longer as I am still searching for the meaning of the signs from nature. Still, it is very clear to me that I have an important role to play in creating a radical change in trail culture. For example, it would be easy for me to write up ways to shower trail magic that makes all people happy by giving tips on nutrition, health, and varieties of treats that would be appreciated by people of all dietary needs. Or asking each state chapter of the ATC to follow the example of Massachusetts, the only sign to let us know whose traditional land we are now entering at the Connecticut/Massachusetts border.

I finally figured out a bold and honest way to answer the most common question: “What is your trail name?” My answer would be this: “I go by my original name to honor the trail and the land where most original names and people have been erased.” After hearing my answer, one young male thru-hiker said, “That’s deep. I am going to go with my original name from now on. I only took a trail name because everyone keeps asking me and I was getting annoyed to say I don’t have a trail name.” I have many thoughts and feelings about names generally, and trail names. I’m getting close to articulating why it’s more appropriate to use original names of the places, and ask a person their name instead of a trail name to reduce the pressure of club entitlement sentiments on the long-distance trail as a way to be more inclusive to all hikers.

And so on….. more thoughts, feelings will crystallize as I continue reflecting on my journey as I look inward.

Caring for my gut and paying attention to my body helped me appreciate the health that I take for granted so often. Besides that, I am feeling immense gratitude and would like to acknowledge what I am grateful for. It is similar to what I wrote at the end of my PCT and CDT, and here it is:

First, for Mother Earth for being our home, creating and taking care of all beings, showing me the beauty, and reminding me of my responsibility to act with love and care.

Second, for my ancestors and family, whom I inherited the exceptional physical, mental, and spiritual capacity to endure and embrace numerous challenges, and recognize and appreciate the magnificence and significance of the three major national scenic trails.

Third, for those who came before me for their tireless work to fight for justice and peace, creating a world where I have the freedom to hike instead of facing systemic issues that prevent me from doing so. On the AT, I particularly held Harriet Tubman close to my heart as we celebrate the 100-year centennial milestone of Black History Month. Her courage, compassion, and bravery are powerful qualities that inspire us to create radical change, and I work to follow in her footsteps to leave the world more just so that all people have opportunities and resources to reach for their dreams and live their lives fully.

Fourth, for indigenous peoples, for their teaching of caring for the land from time immemorial. I acknowledge their unceded territories along all three trails and beyond. I appreciate the chance to tread gently and finish the AT at the sacred Mount Katahdin.

Fifth, for those who take care of the trails– from tribal partners and many trail organizations to federal agency staff members and volunteers- maintaining the trails for years.

Sixth, for trail angels who provided me with rides, water, and food. I don’t even know some of your faces and names. Your generosity touched me deeply.

Finally, for my friends, families, and corporate partners- we did it together. My values align with collectivism over individualism; therefore, my success is your success. I could not have completed all three trials over the course of the last four years without your support. Some of you let me use your equipment to prepare food, came over to my home to pack food in resupply boxes, gave me donations and gear, helped me move out of my apartment, gave me rides and places to stay, managed resupply boxes, helped launch and maintain this website, met me at trailhead and showered me with your love as my personal trail angel, hosted me with a bed, shower and delicious meals, helped to fix gear, ran errands, sent me messages to cheer me on, quietly followed my journey through reading my blog posts and so much more. Thank you.

The view from my friend Martha’s backyard on the coast of Maine where I am resting and recovering at the moment. My friends are my treasure and play vital role to our success

I will be getting ready for the next chapter of my bike adventure soon. My bike trip follows the Northern Tier Bike (NTB) Route from Hanover, NH, where the AT and NTB Route overlap, and I’ll make my way westbound to Owen Sound in Ontario, the northern terminus of the Underground Railroad Bike Route (UGRR). From there, I’ll ride southbound, learning black history along the way as much as I can, to Mobile, Alabama, where the route ends. From there, I’ll make my way to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the AT, to make a full-circle journey.

It’ll be a very different bike packing trip compared to the Pacific Coast Bike Route and Great Divide MTB Route. I intentionally chose the UGRR as my triple crown of bike path to acknowledge the sacrifice and labour that got us freedom, and to appreciate and celebrate life. I will take more time, pause, learn, and make meaning of the significance of this journey. I am also looking forward to reconnecting with some of my wonderful friends who live near the route.

Any southbound journey puts me in the position to face the sun. I will remember the sunflower’s teaching: no matter how the day goes or how I feel, the sun will always rise. Greet the sun every day with gratitude and purpose. Consistently. Then, propel!

I hope you will follow along the next chapter of this adventure.
