It all meant to be. The universe wanted me to see the miracle of connections with people and the Earth, giving me time and space to make sense of it and be in awe.

At Waterbury, I was showered with blessings from new friends: Lyra and Tony. They are friends of a friend of mine. I loved how down-to-earth, kind, and outdoorsy they were. Lyra mentioned that they haven’t bought much from the grocery store recently since they grow their own vegetables, and her mom gives them eggs and chickens she raises. I felt home at their home, surrounded by wood walls and the way they bring nature inside. Since they thru-hiked the AT, they knew exactly what I needed: fresh food, a shower, laundry, loaner clothes, computer access, and help with fixing the gear. I didn’t need to explain or say much of my needs- they get it. I enjoyed alone time writing my blog post on their computer, their homegrown cherry tomatoes and cucumbers, and creative time with Tony fixing my hiking pole. As I learned about them and how they live, I wanted to spend more time with them. We share similar values. It all meant to be- I thought. I knew this new friendship would outlast just one encounter. As they dropped me off at the trailhead the next day, I thought I wished I had more time with them and trusted that the universe would bring us together again.

My thru-hiking experience is full of this type of incredible human connection. Without it, it would be a totally different experience. It helps me to trust the world, understanding the fundamental truth that we are all connected. With the sense of connection, I feel happy, joyful, whole, and complete.

At the trailhead, there was a mini free library, and I saw this sticker on it. I liked it a lot! I can imagine myself living in Vermont, where people look out for each other, pick up hitchhikers, make funny jokes, and do outdoor things!

I expected the terrain out of Waterbury to be steep and difficult. My pack was heavy with a full resupply. The mountain was not as rugged as I imagined. I was relieved as I inched my way up and down in the woods. It was foggy in the morning, and by midday, it cleared out, and the sunshine came through the trees. I wanted to finish climbing Mt. Mansfield, the tallest peak in Vermont, since the weather was nice and I knew the next day it would be cloudy with potential rain. Now the daylight is shorter, and my stamina is lower, reflecting the changes of the season; I decided to call it for the day earlier than usual and not to push for the summit. I settled into a camp right before entering the alpine zone. I had a restful, quiet, and peaceful night at Twin Brook Tentsite.

For the next four days, I kept thinking I should have kept going and finished Mt. Mansfield on the first day. On the third day, I was a little short of finishing climbing Mt. Belvidere, and on my fourth day, Jay Peak, missing the view from the peaks since I made it to both summits on the foggy following early mornings instead of beautiful early evenings.

The observation tower on top of Mount Belvidere in the foggy morning

As I was hiking, I regretted my decision even though I knew I was doing the right thing: sync with nature’s rhythm and listen to my body and energy. I thought, “This is not how I usually hike!” I tried to tap into my learning: everything happens for a reason, and things would unfold the way they all meant to. Yet, I still couldn’t shake off the regret, searching for a cue or an answer from the universe.

The thing is, I didn’t know anything about the Long Trail, and I didn’t know if there was any camp or water at the top of these mountains or on the way down. Later, when I found a nice camp spot near the observation tower at Mount Belvidere, I thought, “I could’ve made it here last night!!” As much as I thought it was a bummer, it was what it was. I reminded myself of being in the present moment and letting go of feelings that don’t serve me. Still, I had a very hard time practicing the teaching during this section.

Although I didn’t know much about the trail itself, I knew I was supposed to be hiking the trail. I slowly started picking up the cues and answers as the days went by.

As I approached Mount Mansfield right after sunrise, I met two young people from Canada, taking a break on the outside bench at the visitor center. They offered me a bottle of Gatorade and asked if I needed water. First, I thought they were trail angels, but they were day hikers. Meeting them and having a conversation with them made me realize that you don’t need to be a trail angel to be generous. You can be anyone and be generous, sharing what you have, including your time and smile. They made my day.

Steep climb towards Mt. I made the best leaf spout of the season! I knew it would benefit whoever comes after me, making it easier for them to collect water. I was happy with how it turned out; not only was it convenient, but it was also beautiful art. I watched how water flowed over the leaf, thinking that I could stare at the art for a very long time.

The best leaf spout I made this hiking season!

On the last night on the trail, I camped at Jay Camp instead of making it to the peak and camping on the other side. When I woke up this morning, I had a visitor in my tent: a tiny Red Eft! I also spotted a tiny salamander curled up on the moss under my headlamp. If I had gone up the mountain the evening before, I would have missed meeting these little creatures, reminding me to remember the little ones. They play an important role as an indicator species of the environment, and their presence means a healthy ecosystem. Speaking of little ones, there are many others, such as phytoplankton who produce the majority of the Earth’s oxygen and feed zooplankton that are responsible for feeding other creatures in the ocean and humans. Something shifted today. Instead of an error, be brave in the fall. It’s just a learning experience. No need to punish myself when I take a fall on the trail. The last two days after the rain, the trail was very wet, and I had to be extra careful with foot placement, the angles of my foot, how much weight to put, how I shift my weight, how I land, and still, I slipped so many times. It teaches me that some lessons are hard, jarring, surprising, and painful. It reminds me how vulnerable we are. All I have to do is take a moment, acknowledge my feelings, take a few deep breaths to reset, and get up. This approach can be used in any life situation.

As I was getting close to the end of the trail, I thought the trail was just a reflection of what I think is ideal living, no matter where I am or what I do. The weather changes all the time, and I need to dress and do things accordingly. It asks me to be flexible, patient, and creative. The moment my mind wanders, the trail gives me direct feedback right then, calling me to be here now. I have everything I absolutely need in a backpack and know how to live a simple life, a key to sustainable living. I can differentiate between what I need and what’s nice to have.

I arrived at the international border of the US and Canada around noon. The sun came out and shone its light on the mountains. I was happy and content, looking over Canadian Mountains since I made it to the US-Canadian border for both PCT and CDT, and walked into Canada to end my hiking journey. I was able to do the same on the AT/LT, except for walking into Canada. Instead, I walked 2 miles along the trail named “Journey’s End Trail.” I thought, “How perfect!”

I knew that the Journey’s End Trail would bring me to a parking lot and, from there, continue walking to the first paved road. I heard that there wouldn’t be much of a traffic for hitchhiking, but I trusted that it would all work out and be able to hitch a ride back to my friend Megan’s home.

At the last stream on the trail, I was getting water, and I saw an elder day hiker smiling at me. I smiled back and went back to filter the water. I thought he was going to the monument, but I never heard him cross the stream or the sound of his footsteps. I turned around, and he was gone. I thought the forest was playing a trick on me, that he might have been a forest spirit with a gentle smile, appearing for a moment to congratulate me. I started hiking toward the parking lot, and in a few minutes, I caught up with him. As I was passing him, we said hi. I saw him wearing leather gloves, so I asked him if he was there to collect mushrooms. He said, “No, I just like hiking.” I didn’t say anything, but in my mind, I said, “Me too.”

When I made it to the parking lot, he wasn’t too far behind me. There was only one car parked, and it was his. He asked, “Do you need a ride?” I introduced my name, and he said, “My name is Steve.”

It was the first and last time on this entire thru-hiking season that somebody asked me if I needed a ride. I said yes to his offer, and Steve said he would give me a ride to Route 100 for an easier hitch. Before getting into his car, he asked what it takes to thru-hike the Long Trail and what he needs to do to make it happen. I said, “I can tell you in the car.”

As we drove from the trailhead to the highway, I saw no traffic. It would have been a long walk to hit the highway, and I could have been standing on the first paved road for hours to find a ride. It was supposed to be a few minutes’ drive to Route 100. It turned out to be more than a few minutes because Steve took me all the way to Montpelier, where Megan and I were supposed to meet. We enjoyed the conversation, shared our life experiences, and asked many deep questions like: Who am I? What’s my purpose? How can I share the deep meaning of my experiences with the world? I felt connected at the spiritual level with him, just within 90 minutes. He is 83, hoping to thru-hike the Long Trail, perhaps next year. As I said goodbye, I thought I wanted to do everything I could to help him plan and make it happen for him.

It all made sense in the end- I was supposed to meet him, and so did others along the way. If I hiked more miles on the first day to make it to the summit of Mansfield, Mt. Belvidere on the third day, and Jay Peak on the fourth day, or if I were a few minutes behind him, I would have totally missed him, and there wouldn’t be such a memorable and pleasant ending. In his presence, I felt comfort. I felt complete, not in a sense of completing the trail from end to end, but in a sense of having someone witness my wholesomeness as a being on this planet. Later in the evening, Steve sent me a drawing of me along with his beautiful writing. When I saw the art, it took my breath away. A person could capture the elements of my being in such a short encounter! The time doesn’t matter. When we understand each other, we just do.

This is me! Be open to invite the oneness with all that’s around us. My love for thru-hiking is not just about walking in the woods, feeling the sense of freedom and joy. Meeting people and feeling care, love, connection, and inspiration from them is what makes the life of thru-hiking and everyday life more meaningful, revealing our fundamental truth: we are all connected.

I’ll continue walking. I’ll continue trusting the world whether I am hiking or not; even if something bad happens, I choose to live my life from a place of trust, rather than fear. She was unfamiliar with Vermont and was looking for a road on which she could hitchhike to where she was to meet a friend. I said I’d help her find that road—route 100, just a few miles away—and as I did we began a conversation that lasted for well over an hour, spanning the entire distance of 60 miles or more to where she and her friend connected.

It was not her notable accomplishments but rather the spirit of what animated her journeys, and the journeys I shared with her of my life, that led both of us to realize a special kinship. She was just completing her end-to-end hike of the Long Trail, not quite 300 miles; and before that this year she had completed the 2198 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. In fact, if I remember correctly, in recent years she had end-to-ended all the major trails in the U.S., which also included the Pacific Crest Trail (2653 miles) and the Continental Divide Trail (3028 miles).

All solo.

We may never meet again, which makes our encounter particularly noteworthy: the common bond of a consuming hunger to live in that spirit that is the essence of existence.

You walk in beauty, 55.

It all made sense at the very end- why I paused my bike trip and thru-hiked the remaining 166 miles of the Long Trail.
